Despite claiming to list the best in Britain, the Telegraph article only features one hotel from Scotland and two from Wales, meaning the vast bulk are in England. We'll start with Wales and Scotland first.

Penally Abbey, Tenby, Pembrokeshire

A labour of love for husband and wife team Lucas and Melanie Boissevain, who discovered the charming 18th century gothic house in 2014. Penally Abbey has been stylishly decorated while retaining the important period details. Eleven beautiful bedrooms and great cooking, with beautiful local ingredients, make this a quiet and charming retreat.

Prestonfield House, Edinburgh

The Telegraph's competitor, the Independent, rates Prestonfield House as "the most glamourous hotel in town" so at least the papers agree on this stylish hideaway. It's situated a five minute taxi drive away from Waverley Station yet surrounded in twenty acres of lush gardens and parkland. There's even an 18-hole golf course!

Originally built as the grand baroque home of Edinburgh's Lord Provost the hotel is richly decorated with all the opulence you could wish for.

Thyme, Southrop, Gloucestershire

Situated on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Natural Beauty, Thyme has an exceptionally relaxed feel. Decorated in cool creams and browns to reflect the restored historic buildings, set in a peaceful hamlet a few miles from Cirencester, the destination features a cookery school, shop and spa. It's the perfect place from which to explore the sweeping, idyllic countryside and gorgeous villages of the Cotswolds.

Cary Arms & Spa, Babbacombe, Devon

Overflowing with coastal charm, the Cary Arms & Spa is owned by legendary hotelier, Peter de Savary and his wife Lana. There are ten rooms and three cottages on the site and the spa enjoys uninterrupted views of the unspoilt Jurassic coastline. The hotel combines the values of a classic English inn with the style and comfort of a luxury hotel.

The Gallivant, Camber, Sussex

By far the newest building on the list, the Gallivant was originally a Sixties motel. Freshly decorated in Scandi-cool, Hamptons-influenced chic and set just over the road from the sand dunes of the Sussex coast, the Gallivant is the place for "grown-ups who want to escape and have a good time".

The Lord Crewe Arms, Blanchland Northumberland

Finally, how about a 12th century abbot's lodge at the heart of a village in the wilds of the North Pennine moors? The Lord Crewe also made the list of fifty most romantic hotels in Europe compiled by the Sunday Telegraph and is the perfect place for walking and cycling in this isolated and beautiful area.
