The best boats of the big screen

These floating film stars are responsible for some of the most iconic movie scenes known to man. Boats, camera, action!

Whether you're a fisherman, boat trader, speed freak or just love all things afloat, here are some of the best big screen wonders of the water.

You're gonna need a bigger boat

A line that started out as an on-set in-joke between the cast and crew of Jaws has transcended light-hearted humour to become on the most memorable phrases in film. Actor Scheider and director Spielberg's talents combine to introduce the finned fiend and drop jaws for Jaws.

See anything you like?!

Shot in San Diego, Nic Cage and John Travolta take to the water for an intense boat chase in Face Off that ends with an explosive finale. After they've battled both mentally and physically throughout the whole of the movie, these arch enemies come to a crescendo of tension by dodging piers, ploughing through police boats and anchor-surfing off starboard.

Taking to the Thames with Bond in a boat

Desmond Llewelyn as Q screams to Brosnan's Bond that the boat is unfinished, but that doesn't stop 007 setting out on a spytastic trip into the Thames. This powerboat performance proved that action on the water outweighs car chases by far, even though James Bond still took to the streets in his boat, too!

An experience of Titanic proportions

It has to be in here, doesn't it? Credit where it's due, we should all bow to Winslet's wonder as she exclaims: “I'm flying!” Tragic as it may be, the Titanic deserves to be on any best boating movie lists made up, even if it does leave you with My Heart Will Go On stuck in your head for about a week afterwards.

When the boat steals the show

Waterworld may have damp squib at the cinema, but it's always been a guilty pleasure of mine. One thing's more certain than a Smoker lighting up another cig, though... Kevin Costner's trimaran puts in a solid performance throughout. In fact, there were two of the multi-hull marvels made – one standard build for distance shots and one with all the extra post-apocalyptic gubbins for close ups.
