Why you should caravan over Christmas

With the weather in the UK being more variable, but warmer overall, there's an increasing number of people getting out and about in their caravans over Christmas. Why not join them?

There are a lot of advantages, especially if you visit family over Christmas. Not many people have room for everyone so extra guests have to rent expensive hotel rooms. That's even more annoying when they're not spending much time in them.

If your hosts have a drive, you can park up and the caravan becomes an extra room for everyone to use - perhaps a quiet room, or a games room to keep kids amused during the day as well as extra sleeping space.

It also means, if you're a dog lover, that you can bring your pooches with you instead of having to put them into expensive kennels over Christmas.

Christmas touring

But there's nothing to stop you getting out and touring over Christmas too.

With a modern well-equipped caravan you'll be warm enough and can get away from it all. With your own television you can choose what to watch, and a modern park will have fast broadband so you can watch or listen to other programmes on the internet too.

Although many caravan parks close over the winter, you'll find that some larger ones and even smaller ones, in the more popular destinations, stay open. That number is steadily increasing as year-round caravanning becomes more popular.

A quick search on the Caravan Club website shows more than 55 sites open either all year round or up to January - either of which will be perfect for a Christmas break.

Most of them will have very keen rates for winter stays.

Top tips

If you do fancy getting away over the holiday, your chances of a white Christmas will be slim unless you go up into the mountains of Wales or Scotland. But that doesn't mean it won't get cold, so take extra blankets and warm clothing.

Keep an eye on your water supplies and hoses too. Top up your own tank regularly and be aware that in extreme cold, the water and waste pipes on your pitch might freeze, so keep everything well insulated. This goes for the toilet too - make sure your fluid works at lower temperatures.

Stock up on food and drinks, particularly cans. It seems that a small snowfall is all that's needed to paralyse parts of the UK, so be sure you can survive on what you've bought with you, if necessary.

Leave behind your summer stuff - garden chairs, barbecue and the like - this will give you the room to take extra food and winter equipment.

Finally - don't forget your Christmas presents! But buy and wrap them all well in advance so that you're ready to get away.
