Are micro-homes the latest threat to Landlords?

Micro-homes have been hitting the UK press in the last few years. But we want to know how much do Landlords really need to worry about this new business model?

The English Housing Survey announced that the private rented sector doubled in size since 2004, with ownership at the lowest level since 1985.

Due to the increase in demand of rented properties we have seen a boom in rentals of less than 37 square metres - about the size of a Tube carriage.

These aptly named micro-homes are popping up all over big cities. In 2016 alone there was a whopping 8000 built in the UK.

Do Landlords need to be concerned?

As with most things there seems to be a clear divide between those for the micro-home movement and those against. These new designs have been coined "rabbit hutch" flats by some.

Most people would assume that a micro-home would come with a micro-price tag however this doesn't seem to be the case. Micro-homes or mirco-flats are expected to cost between £700 - £1200 per month!

Modernistic design

You can't deny that the architects of these tiny homes use every space to the best of it's ability. Most things have multiple use and it's a clever feat of engineering and interior design to make these spaces both homely and practical.

So whilst these modern homes may be located in city centres, I think many people wouldn't be willing to sacrifice space for location. Lovely though they are, you have little to no storage and at that price I'd rather have a full sized home!
