5 Must-see Mediterranean ports
Gisele Ghanem, 1st May 2017, Boat
When we left our lives in Canada behind for a life at sea, we knew we were embarking on the adventure of a lifetime. A little under a year and nearly forty destinations later, here’s a list of our top five port towns we discovered along the way.
1. Ajaccio, France
We spent the summer in Corsica, eager to take in all the wonders the island had to offer. From its scenic routes to its charming villages, it will undoubtedly enchant even the most seasoned traveler. Ajaccio, on the west coast, is an absolute must-see and a personal favorite. Its daily local market is sure to satisfy any foodie’s taste buds with the finest Corsican charcuterie and French cheeses.
2. Cassis, France
Sailing along the French Riviera was like a dream, and discovering each town by foot was the better reality. At sea level, the streets, lined with lavender shops and bakeries offering freshly baked fougasse, exude Provençal charm. But the real highlight is hiking atop the highest peaks of the Calanques National Park.
Not for the average acrophobe!
3. Savona, Italy
Forecasted storms along the Ligurian Coast forced us to take shelter in unexpected harbours. As sailors, we welcome these opportunities as they often lead to serendipitous discoveries. Savona was a pleasant surprise. Its unpretentious town and restaurants, in contrast to the majestic Priamar Fortress and Cappella Sistina, give it a special flair. After sneaking a peak in the Port of Monaco over the Grand Prix weekend, docking in Savona’s modest harbour was refreshing!
4. Barcelona, Spain
As we made our approach after sunset, we were taken aback by the impressive skyline and seafront towers, the likes of which we were no longer accustomed to seeing.
With museums scattered throughout the city, tapas bars at every corner and some of the world’s best markets, Barcelona has something for everyone. Gaudí’s unparalleled Sagrada Familia depicts Catalan Modernism at its finest and is sure to please art aficionados and architecture enthusiasts alike. But the side streets in the Barri Gòtic area are Barcelona’s real gems.
5. Valencia, Spain
Last but not least, Valencia was a real find. The city emanates culture, the old town and medieval landmarks proudly display Baroque and Gothic influences, the air smells of fresh seafood and traditional paella, stretches of white beaches hug the city, and lovely orange trees embellish patches of green. What’s not to love?
