Your guide to: Mac vs. Windows
Sara D'Souza, 20th July 2016, Business
When you're in the market for a new computer it can be a minefield working out whether a Mac or PC will be better for your business. We navigate which could work for you.
One of the first things to bear in mind is that it may be easier for everyone in the office to be either Mac or Windows as file sharing between the two can often be tricky. Macs are generally more widely used within the creative industries but those lines are blurring with both pros and cons for each.
Mac - Pros
It's got to be said that Macs look beautiful. Streamlined and sleek with clean lines, Macs have an excellent design. The laptops are incredibly easy to carry around, with some weighing as little as 2.03 pounds and the desktops have the computer built into the screen so there's no heavy separate box to power it.
- As yet there are virtually no viruses for a Mac, so it's much less of a worry that your computer will be affected by malware.
- If you ever have a problem with your Mac the Apple teams whether online or in store are knowledgeable and well trained to help.
- Mac comes with plenty of software already installed for example iMovie, Pages and Keynote.
Mac - Cons
- Mac is constantly updating its software, operating systems and products, which on one hand can be a plus but on the other can be extremely expensive and they become out dated very easily.
Windows - Pros
Despite Macs - popularity, Windows users show no sign of abating with Windows 10 launching in January this year. A big plus on the Windows Pros list is that they are much cheaper than Macs and getting software for them is also less expensive.
- There's also a greater variety of software available.
- Flexibility - PCs allow you to tailor your machine to exactly what you want and need and you are not constrained to say only listening to music through iTunes.
- PCs are also far easier to upgrade yourself.
Windows - Cons
- Viruses. Windows are incredibly susceptible to getting a virus as new ones are created all the time. Make sure to keep your Windows anti-virus up to date.
- At the cost of flexibility comes the fact that PCs are not as user friendly, although hardened Windows users may disagree.
We hope this has helped made your choice a little easier, but of course always speak to an impartial adviser in a store that sells both Macs and Windows. They can listen to what your requirements are and advice you on what will be best suit to you.
