Embracing technology is something that we can all benefit from, even though the world of iThis and Android KitKat that can seem daunting at first. Whether you're after a way of making your journeys easier, faster or more fun, or you're just after something to do in the evenings, you can load up your smartphone pre-trip and be sorted for the whole holiday with this lot. Be aware of Wi-Fi needs and in-app costs, although even abroad now, many operators have sacked off roaming charges - great news!

what3words

The what3words app is like a sat-nav/Google maps, but it lets you pinpoint an exact location (3x3m) using a combo of three words. Not only is it incredible in its own right, but Mercedes-Benz has now announced that it's going to use the w3w geocoding system in its sat-nav systems next year. If that's not enough of a backing for you, just stick with a paper map and struggle along.

Netflix

While caravanning is all about getting back to nature and keeping things tech free, this article wouldn't amount to much if we solely went by those rules. You need a film to accompany your beer, wine or brew, and Netflix has everything from cosy rom-coms to pant-wetting scarefests. There's plenty for the kids on there, too, and subscriptions start from little more than a pint.

Cookery

Perhaps an ironic name considering the size of a caravan hotbox, but BigOven is one of the best food apps around, giving you everything you need to discover recipes, even if you have to repurpose them slightly to suit your trip. Plus, you can type in three ingredients (whatever you have leftover, for example) and it'll give options for a whole new meal. Tuck in!

Spirit Level

There are countless spirit level apps available in both Apple and Android stores, and they're the perfect addition to your homescreen when it comes to touring. You could always go old-school and use an actual spirit level, but one day you'll forget it. An app is the perfect back-up, if nothing else. Plus you can get some that instruct you out loud, too – perfect if you're caravanning on your own.
