BREAK INS: Caravans are being targeted by thieves!

Unfortunately caravans are seen by some people as easy targets and storage locations are often targeted in organised attacks, where a number of caravans will be broken into at once.

Driveway storage

If you keep your caravan stored on your driveway it is a good idea to put some security measures in place. Such as sensor security lights so that if someone decides to snoop around your caravan, the illumination will deter them for staying long!

You could also consider buying CCTV to be installed facing your caravan. You can pick up CCTV cameras relatively cheaply now from high street stores, or if you prefer a dummy CCTV camera may be enough to deter thieves.

CaSSOA

Storage sites that have joined the Caravan Storage Site Owners Association (CaSSOA) system will be rated gold, silver or bronze according to the level of security offered. CaSSOA affiliated operations have to monitor and log movements in and out of the site and will have various security systems in place, depending on the level of accreditation.

Two points worth mentioning about CaSSOA sites is that they are regularly surveyed to make sure that security levels are consistently maintained, and that many caravan insurance policies will offer a discount for CaSSOA storage.

Check your insurance

That leads us to another point - some caravan owners cancel their caravan insurance in the autumn and leave them uncovered while in storage, thinking that they'll be covered by the storage site's insurance policy - this will almost certainly be wrong.

Read the details of any storage contract and it's very unlikely that the site's insurance policy will cover individual caravans from theft or damage.

It's also worth mentioning that if you use a more informal site to store your caravan, like a farmer's field or yard, and an insurance company decides that the security measures don't meet the stipulations of your caravan policy, they could refuse a theft or damage claim.
